Lineman Jobs in West Virginia

West Virginia is not a right-to-work holdout, it passed right-to-work in 2016, but the utility line side stayed heavily organized and IBEW still covers most of the outside work here. Pay sits below the national median for line workers, and the tradeoff is winter ice storms across the Alleghenies plus remnant hurricane rain that stalls over the mountains and takes down poles on grades a bucket truck cannot reach. Expect to climb, and expect long storm restoration rolls from December through March.

Who's Hiring

West Virginia Employers

Appalachian PowerIOU · South

AEP's southern West Virginia utility, the largest single source of full-time journeyman and apprentice seats in the state.

Mon PowerIOU · North

FirstEnergy's north-central territory covering Morgantown, Fairmont and Clarksburg distribution.

Potomac EdisonIOU · East

Eastern Panhandle work, closer to the Maryland and Virginia labor market than to Charleston.

Co-ops & ContractorsMixed

Rural co-ops and traveling line contractors fill the mountain gaps and staff up hard after every ice event.

Where the Work Is

Charleston and Huntington anchor Appalachian Power territory, Morgantown and Parkersburg sit in Mon Power's, and Wheeling straddles the Ohio border. Which one you target changes the hiring process more than the pay; the IOU vs co-op hiring differences are real here because the co-ops will take you on with less experience.

Questions

West Virginia Lineman FAQ

How do I get started as a lineman in West Virginia?

Most people start as a groundman with a rural co-op or a contractor, then apply to an IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship once they have hours in. Appalachian Power and Mon Power both run apprentice intakes, but they are competitive and infrequent.

Is West Virginia a union state for linemen?

West Virginia is right-to-work, so you cannot be required to join, but IBEW still holds most of the outside line agreements with the major utilities. Use the IBEW local finder to identify which local covers the territory you are targeting rather than guessing.

What does the storm season actually look like here?

Winter ice from roughly December through March is the main event, and mountain terrain means restoration is slow, on-foot, and climb-heavy. Crews also get called out for stalled tropical remnants in late summer, which flood access roads more than they break conductor.
