Getting Hired

What You Need

Class A CDL, climbing time, and energized work experience are baseline everywhere. In the east, underground and network experience matters most; in the west and north, it is off-road driving, terrain access, and cold-weather restoration availability.

Entry Path

Groundman with a contractor is the standard entry, then into the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship once you have hours. PPL, PECO, and Duquesne Light each run their own utility apprenticeships on their own schedules. Use the IBEW local finder to identify the book covering outside line work in your county.
