New Jersey
New Jersey Lineman Jobs

New Jersey is not a right-to-work state, and IBEW outside construction agreements cover most contractor line work here, so pay sits above the national median for line workers. The tradeoff is density: you will spend more of your career in underground vaults, manholes, and network secondary in Newark, Jersey City, and Camden than you will framing new overhead. Coastal storm and nor'easter restoration runs from roughly June through March, and shore-county recovery work pulls crews in from out of state every season.

Who Hires

New Jersey Employers

PSE&GIOU

The state's largest utility, covering Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Trenton, and most of the northern corridor.

Jersey Central Power & LightIOU

FirstEnergy subsidiary serving central and coastal counties, heavy on storm restoration.

Atlantic City ElectricIOU

Exelon utility covering the shore counties where hurricane and nor'easter damage lands first.

Rockland ElectricIOU

Small Orange & Rockland footprint in the far northeast corner of the state.

South Jersey MunisMunicipal

Small city-owned systems with fewer openings but shorter commutes and local hiring preference.

Henkels & McCoyContractor

Line construction contractor working distribution and underground buildouts across the state.

New Jersey has almost no rural electric co-op presence, so the IOU vs co-op vs muni tradeoff here is really a choice between four investor-owned utilities and the contractors that serve them.

Getting Hired

What You Need

Underground work is the differentiator. Splicing, manhole entry, and network experience will move you ahead of candidates who only have overhead time. A Class A CDL and current storm availability are close behind.

Entry Path

Most people start as a groundman with a contractor and apply into the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship once they have hours. Utility apprenticeships at PSE&G and JCP&L post infrequently and draw large applicant pools. Use the IBEW local finder to confirm which book covers outside line work in your county.

Questions

New Jersey FAQ

Is New Jersey a right-to-work state?

No. Union density is high and most outside line construction runs under IBEW agreements, which is the main reason New Jersey pay sits above the national median.

Do I need underground experience to get hired in New Jersey?

Not to start, but it decides who advances. The Newark, Jersey City, and Camden systems are heavily underground, so cable splicing and network experience is worth more here than in most states.

Is there storm work in New Jersey?

Yes, mainly coastal. Hurricane season and winter nor'easters both hit the shore counties served by Atlantic City Electric and JCP&L, and storm restoration pay is a real part of annual earnings if you keep yourself available.
