Delaware Lineman Jobs

Delaware is a three-county state you can drive end to end in under two hours, so crews cover coast, farmland and city on the same truck. Pay tracks the Mid-Atlantic band and sits above the national middle, closer to what you see across the Pennsylvania and New Jersey line than to the Southeast; check the lineman salary by state guide before you take a number at face value. Delaware is not a right-to-work state, and outside line work here runs through IBEW, so use the IBEW local finder to sign the right book instead of guessing at a local number.

Who Hires

The Employer Set

Delmarva PowerIOU

Exelon-owned investor-owned utility covering most of the state, the largest single distribution employer here.

Delaware Electric CooperativeCo-op

Serves Kent and Sussex, so co-op work here means farmland, chicken houses and beach territory.

Municipal UtilitiesMuni

Newark, Dover, Milford and Smyrna run their own systems and hire in small, infrequent batches.

Line ContractorsContract

Where most openings sit, since a state this small has few utility slots and steady contract build work.

The three employer types run different hiring calendars and different pay structures, covered in IOUs vs co-ops vs municipal utilities.

Getting In

Delaware has no in-state lineman college program, so most people start as a groundman with a contractor or apply into the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship and travel for classroom weeks. A Class A CDL and a clean DOT card move you up the list faster here than another certificate does.

Questions

Delaware FAQ

Is Delaware storm-pay territory?

Yes, but the money comes from mutual aid, not local damage. Delaware sits on the Atlantic hurricane track from June through November, and crews here spend more hours restoring the Carolinas and Gulf than restoring Sussex County; see the storm pay guide for what those callouts actually pay.

Where are the jobs actually located?

Wilmington and Newark carry the density in New Castle County, Dover anchors the middle, and Sussex County beach growth drives new residential distribution work. You can live anywhere in the state and commute to all three.

Do I need to leave Delaware to get trained?

Usually. With no lineman school in state, apprentices commonly train through IBEW or travel to a nearby program, so plan on out-of-state classroom time. Compare options in the apprenticeship programs by state guide.
