You are on the ground running rigging, handling material, and keeping the crew moving while you learn what the job looks like from underneath it. Many utilities and contractors pull apprentices straight out of their own groundman ranks, which is why this seat is the clearest route into a lineman apprenticeship.

Do I need experience to get hired as a groundman?

Usually not. Groundman is the no-experience seat, though a clean driving record, a willingness to travel, and physical capability move you to the front of the line. A pre-apprentice program helps but is not required.

How long before I make apprentice?

Is a groundman a lineman?
