Lineman Jobs in Maryland

Maryland is not a right-to-work state, so union security clauses are legal here and IBEW outside agreements cover most of the utility work between Baltimore and the DC line. Pay sits above the national median, pulled up by the density of the Baltimore-Washington corridor. The trade-off is that a lot of the work is underground: the metro core runs heavy conduit and cable, while overhead and rebuild work concentrates on the Eastern Shore and out toward Hagerstown.

Who Hires

Employers in This Market

Maryland splits between Exelon-owned utilities in the metro, member-owned co-ops on the Shore and in the south, and contractors working all of them. The hiring differences between IOUs and co-ops matter more here than in most states because the two hire on completely different timelines.

BGEBaltimore

The largest system in the state, with heavy underground distribution inside the city.

PepcoDC Suburbs

Covers Montgomery and Prince George's counties into the District.

Delmarva PowerEastern Shore

Coastal territory around Salisbury, where overhead and storm work still dominate.

Potomac EdisonWestern MD

FirstEnergy system serving Frederick, Hagerstown, and the western counties.

SMECO & ChoptankCo-op

Member-owned systems covering southern Maryland and the Shore, smaller crews and wider territory.

Henkels & McCoy, PikeContract

Build and rebuild for the utilities above, and travel between them.

Storm and Seasonal Work

Maryland catches the tail of Atlantic hurricane season from roughly June through November, usually as a tropical remnant rather than a direct hit, plus winter ice in the western counties. Coastal flooding on the Shore drives outages that a direct-hit state never sees. Most linemen here supplement with travel, so read the storm pay guide before you take a call.

Getting In

The Entry Path

Groundman first. Contractors will hire you with no school and no time on hooks; utilities generally will not.

Class A CDL. Expected at nearly every employer in the state. Get it before you apply.

Sign the book. Union security is legal in Maryland; use the IBEW local finder to find the outside local covering your county.

Underground counts. Cable and splicing time is worth more in the Baltimore-DC corridor than climbing time. See the underground path.

Maryland scale runs above the national middle. Compare it against Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware in the salary by state guide.

Questions

Maryland FAQ

Is Maryland a right-to-work state?

No. Union security clauses are legal in Maryland, and IBEW outside agreements cover most utility line work in the Baltimore-Washington corridor.

Do I need underground experience to work in Maryland?

Not to get hired, but it pays off. BGE and Pepco run dense underground distribution through Baltimore and the DC suburbs, so cable and splicing time carries more weight there than it would on the Eastern Shore or out near Hagerstown.

What is storm season like for Maryland linemen?

Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, and Maryland usually takes tropical remnants and coastal flooding rather than direct landfall. Western counties add winter ice, and most linemen chase bigger storm pay by traveling south.
