Lineman Jobs in Virginia

Virginia pays around the national median for line work, and the data-center corridor in Loudoun and Prince William counties is pulling transmission and substation crews north. It is a right-to-work state, so union density is thinner than the Northeast; check the IBEW local finder before you assume a book to sign. Nor'easters and remnant hurricanes hit the Tidewater and Eastern Shore from August through October, and ice storms work the Blue Ridge in winter.

Who Hires

Employers Across the State

The mix runs investor-owned in the east, co-op in the rural middle, with contractors chasing the data-center build. That mix changes how you get hired; see IOU vs co-op vs muni hiring.

Dominion EnergyIOU

Largest footprint, from Richmond and Hampton Roads out to the Northern Virginia transmission build.

Appalachian PowerIOU / West

Roanoke and the southwest mountains, where winter ice drives most of the outage work.

NOVECCo-op

Northern Virginia co-op territory sitting next to the heaviest data-center load in the country.

Line ContractorsTravel

Hired against transmission and substation projects, with per diem and storm callouts attached.

Where the Work Concentrates

Northern VirginiaTransmission

Data-center load means new lines, new substations, and steady contractor headcount.

Richmond & NorfolkDistribution

Utility distribution and underground, plus coastal storm restoration out of Hampton Roads.

Getting In

What Gets You Hired Here

Groundman First

Most Virginia crews take you on the ground before the pole. Contractors move faster than utilities on entry hires.

Apprenticeship

Both utility-run and IBEW programs operate here; compare paths in the apprenticeship programs by state guide.

Class A CDL

Expect it as a hard requirement or a first-year condition on nearly every posting.

Storm Availability

Coastal employers screen for it directly. Storm restoration pay is where the overtime lives.

Questions

Virginia Lineman FAQ

Is Virginia a union state for linemen?

No. Virginia is right-to-work, so union membership cannot be required as a condition of employment, and non-union contractor work is common. IBEW outside line locals still operate here, but coverage is uneven by region.

When is storm season in Virginia?

Tropical systems reach the Tidewater and Eastern Shore mostly from August through October, and nor'easters run into the winter. Inland and west, the outage driver is ice, not wind.

What is driving lineman demand in Virginia?

Data-center load in Northern Virginia is forcing transmission and substation buildout, which pulls contractor and utility crews toward Loudoun and Prince William counties. Distribution work stays steady around Richmond, Norfolk, and Roanoke.
