Cable Splicer Jobs

Splicing is its own specialty inside the line trade. You work in vaults, manholes, and trenches, joining and terminating medium and high-voltage cable instead of climbing poles. As utilities move load underground, splicer demand keeps growing across the Southeast, Gulf Coast, and Mid-Atlantic; the underground career path from groundman to splicer covers how the progression actually runs.

The work

What Splicers Actually Do

Vault & Manhole WorkConfined Space

Most of your day is below grade, which means gas monitoring, ventilation, and a rescue plan before you drop in.

Splices & TerminationsCore Skill

Joining and terminating medium and high-voltage cable to spec, where one bad prep shows up as a fault months later.

Fault LocatingTroubleshooting

Underground outages are found with test equipment and reasoning, not by driving the line and looking up.

Trench & Duct WorkField

Pulling cable through duct bank, and the excavation and grounding practices that keep it survivable.

How splicing differs from overhead

No climbing. Hooks and belts stay in the truck; confined-space entry replaces pole work.
Weather matters less. Underground work continues through conditions that shut overhead crews down.
Pay tracks journeyman scale, with splicing typically classified at or above journeyman lineman. See union vs non-union scale for how the classification is paid.
Entry is usually lateral. Most splicers come off a groundman or underground crew rather than starting cold.

Questions

Cable Splicer FAQ

Do I need to be a journeyman lineman first?

Not always. Many splicers come up through underground crews as a groundman rather than through overhead journeyman time, though some utilities and locals require journeyman status before you can hold the splicer classification.

What does a cable splicer make?

Splicing is generally classified at or above journeyman lineman scale, and the spread between union and open-shop employers is wider than the spread between splicing and overhead work. Check pay by state before you judge an offer.

Is splicing safer than overhead line work?

Different, not safer. You trade fall exposure for confined-space entry, atmospheric hazards, and arc energy in a vault where you cannot step back from it.
