Lineman Jobs in Connecticut
Connecticut is not a right-to-work state, and outside line work here runs heavily union. Pay sits above the national median, in line with the rest of the Northeast; check the power lineman salary by state guide for how that stacks up. Nor'easters and coastal wind between October and March drive most of the overtime, so your callout availability matters as much as your climbing.
Who Hires
Where the Work Is
Eversource EnergyIOU
The largest employer in the state, covering most of Connecticut's distribution territory.
United IlluminatingIOU
Serves the New Haven and Bridgeport corridor along the coast.
Municipal UtilitiesMuni
Small city-owned systems hire rarely but hold crews long-term.
Regional ContractorsContractor
Fastest way in, and the crews that surge hardest during storm restoration.
Connecticut has no rural electric co-op footprint to speak of, so the IOU vs co-op vs municipal hiring picture here is really IOU versus contractor. Use the IBEW local finder to identify which local holds the outside book for your area before you apply.
Getting In
Your Realistic Entry Path
Most Connecticut apprentices start as a groundman with a contractor, then compete for a slot in an IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship. Direct-hire apprentice openings at Eversource and UI are posted infrequently and draw heavy competition.
What Gets You Called Back
Class A CDL, or a documented plan to have one before start date
Pole climbing hours and bucket truck time you can actually show
Clean switching and clearance discipline for anything above apprentice
Do I need to be in the union to work line in Connecticut?
Not legally, since Connecticut has no right-to-work law but membership is not universally required. In practice most outside line work at Eversource and UI is covered, so you will end up in a local eventually.
When is storm season in Connecticut?
October through March, driven by nor'easters and coastal wind, with occasional tropical remnants in late summer. That winter window is where most of your overtime and mutual aid hours come from.
Where should I look for openings in the state?
Hartford, New Haven, Bridgeport and Stamford carry the densest distribution networks and the most steady crew turnover. Contractor work follows those corridors rather than spreading evenly across the state.
