Ohio Lineman Jobs

Ohio is not a right-to-work state, and IBEW agreements cover most outside line construction here, which puts Ohio pay near the national median with union scale pulling the top end up. The state is carved between three separate investor-owned territories, so which utility you work for depends almost entirely on which corner of Ohio you live in. Data-center load in central Ohio and aging transmission across the whole state mean the work here is buildout and rebuild, not just maintenance.

Who Hires

Ohio Employers

AEP OhioColumbus

Covers central and southeastern Ohio, absorbing the data-center growth around Columbus and New Albany.

FirstEnergyNortheast

Operates the Cleveland, Akron, and Toledo territories through its Ohio Edison and Illuminating Company systems.

Duke Energy OhioCincinnati

Southwest corner only, running distribution and transmission across the Cincinnati metro and into Kentucky.

Ohio Electric Co-opsRural

Two dozen distribution co-ops cover the rural counties between the three IOU territories.

Municipal SystemsMunicipal

Ohio has one of the larger muni counts in the country, including Cleveland Public Power and dozens of small city systems.

Line ContractorsStatewide

Contract crews handle most of the transmission rebuild and substation buildout the utilities do not self-perform.

Ohio is one of the few states where all three employer types are genuinely available in volume, so the IOU vs co-op vs muni decision is a real one here rather than theoretical.

Getting Hired

What You Need

A Class A CDL, climbing time, and energized work experience clear the bar at any Ohio utility. Transmission and substation experience is what separates candidates for the contractor work driving the current buildout.

Entry Path

Groundman with a contractor is the most reliable way in, then apply to the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship once you have hours on the truck. AEP, FirstEnergy, and Duke each run their own utility apprenticeships that post on their own schedules. Check the IBEW local finder to see which book covers outside line work in your part of the state.

Questions

Ohio FAQ

Is Ohio a right-to-work state?

No. Outside line construction here runs largely under IBEW agreements, which is why Ohio union scale sits well above what the non-union contractor side pays in the same territories.

Which Ohio utility should I target?

Geography decides it. AEP Ohio owns central and southeastern Ohio, FirstEnergy has the Cleveland-Akron-Toledo northeast, and Duke Energy Ohio is Cincinnati only, so relocating across the state means changing employers.

Is there storm work in Ohio?

Yes, but it is ice, wind, and summer derecho rather than hurricane. Ohio crews also travel out of state for coastal restoration, which is where most of the storm pay upside comes from.
