Michigan Lineman Jobs

Michigan is not a right-to-work state, and the two utilities that own most of the distribution wire, DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, are union houses. That shapes everything: how you get in, what you make, and how long you wait. Pay sits near the middle of the pack nationally, so check the spread in the salary-by-state guide before you compare an offer to what your buddy makes in another state.

Who is hiring

Michigan Employers

DTE EnergySoutheast

Detroit-area IOU running an aggressive distribution rebuild, which means steady construction work alongside trouble.

Consumers EnergyStatewide

Covers most of the Lower Peninsula outside DTE's footprint, from Grand Rapids and Lansing north.

ITC HoldingsTransmission

Transmission-only owner headquartered in Novi; different work, different crews, no distribution.

Line ContractorsContract

Both utilities lean hard on contract crews for rebuild and restoration, and that is where most travelers land.

Michigan's mix is IOU-heavy with co-ops filling the rural gaps in the north and the U.P. The hiring, seniority, and benefit differences are laid out in the IOU vs co-op vs municipal guide. IBEW covers outside line work at both majors; find the right book through the IBEW local finder.

Where The Work Concentrates

Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Flint carry the volume. Manufacturing load keeps the southeast corridor busy year-round; the west side runs on lake-effect and heavy tree exposure.

What to expect

The Michigan Reality

Ice, Not HurricanesLate fall through early spring brings ice loading and lake-effect snow; summer brings straight-line wind. Restoration work is a winter and a summer story, not a season.

Union StateMichigan repealed right-to-work in 2024, and the major utilities are organized, so the apprenticeship is the front door.

The Entry PathGroundman first, then a spot in an IOU or IBEW apprenticeship. Contractor groundman work is the realistic way to get climbing time on paper.

CDL And ClimbingClass A CDL and documented climbing experience move you up the list at nearly every Michigan posting.

Restoration hours are where the year's income actually swings; the mechanics are in the storm restoration field guide.

Questions

Michigan Lineman FAQ

Is Michigan a union state for linemen?

Yes. Michigan repealed right-to-work in 2024, and outside line work at DTE Energy and Consumers Energy is IBEW-represented. Non-union contractor work exists, but the utility seats run through the union.

What storm work should I expect in Michigan?

Ice loading and lake-effect snow from late fall into spring, plus summer straight-line wind through the southeast. There is no single storm season here; you are on call across both halves of the year.

How do I get in without experience?

Groundman on a contract crew, then apply into a DTE, Consumers, or IBEW apprenticeship once you have documented time. The IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship is the most common route to a Michigan utility seat.
