Wisconsin Lineman Jobs

Wisconsin is not right-to-work for private-sector line work the way most of the Midwest is; the 2015 law was struck down and reinstated, and IBEW density at the big utilities stayed high. Journeyman pay lands mid-pack nationally, above Iowa and below Illinois. Ice storms and lake-effect snow between December and March drive the callout hours, and the summer derecho season is short but violent.

Who Hires

Utilities and Contractors

We EnergiesIOU

The state's largest electric utility, covering Milwaukee, Appleton, and Green Bay territory.

Alliant EnergyIOU

Serves southern and central Wisconsin with distribution and transmission crews.

Madison Gas and ElectricIOU

Small, dense Madison-area system where openings are rare and turnover is low.

Dairyland PowerG&T Co-op

Generation and transmission cooperative behind the rural distribution co-ops in western Wisconsin. [VERIFY]

ATCTransmission

American Transmission Co. owns the high-voltage backbone; contractors do most of the field work. [VERIFY]

Line ContractorsContractor

Where most non-union work and most storm restoration hiring actually happens.

Three big IOUs, a rural co-op layer, and a separate transmission owner is an unusual mix. Read the IOU vs co-op vs muni hiring differences so you know what you are signing up for, and check where Wisconsin lands in the salary-by-state guide.

Getting Hired

What Wisconsin Actually Asks For

Class A CDL

Expected at hire by the utilities, not something you finish during your first year. Handle it before you apply.

Cold-Weather Climbing

You will hook a pole at ten degrees with ice on the wood. Bench-test experience in a warm state does not transfer cleanly.

Winter Callout Availability

December through March ice and lake-effect snow generate most of the overtime. Being unreachable costs you the list.

Energized Work Tickets

Utility postings here routinely name rubber gloving or hot stick qualification as a preference, not a nice-to-have.

Your Way In

Most Wisconsin linemen start as a groundman with a contractor or a co-op, then move to a utility once they have hooks and a CDL. If you want the union track at We Energies or Alliant, the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship is the standard route; use the local finder to confirm which book covers your area before you sign. Non-union apprentices enter through employer-sponsored programs listed in the apprenticeship programs by state guide.

Questions

Wisconsin Lineman FAQ

Is Wisconsin a good state for lineman pay?

Journeyman pay sits mid-pack nationally, above Iowa and below Illinois, and union scale at the large IOUs runs ahead of contractor rates. Cost of living outside Milwaukee and Madison makes that number go further than the raw figure suggests.

What kind of storm work is there in Wisconsin?

There is no hurricane season here. Ice storms and lake-effect snow from December through March generate most callouts, plus a short summer derecho window, and Wisconsin crews frequently travel south and east for storm restoration work.

Are Wisconsin linemen union?

At We Energies, Alliant, and MGE, largely yes; IBEW representation is strong at the investor-owned utilities. Rural co-ops and most line contractors run non-union, which is where the majority of entry-level groundman openings sit.
