Lineman Jobs in Illinois

Illinois is not a right-to-work state, and outside line work here is heavily organized, so the book you sign shapes your career more than in most places. Pay runs above the national median, with Chicago-area scale pulling the state average up. There is no hurricane season to bank on, so your overtime comes from winter ice, spring and summer derechos, and the steady grid-upgrade backlog.

Who Hires

Where the Work Is

ComEdIOU

Covers Chicago and the northern third of the state, the densest distribution work in Illinois.

Ameren IllinoisIOU

Holds central and southern territory, from Peoria down through Metro East.

Rural Co-opsCo-op

Small crews across downstate farmland, fewer openings but long transmission runs.

Line ContractorsContractor

Staff the grid-upgrade and transmission-corridor work, and the fastest way in.

The split between a Chicago IOU and a downstate co-op is not a small one; scale, callout expectations and how you get hired all differ. Read IOU vs co-op vs municipal hiring differences before you decide which side of the state to chase.

Getting In

Your Realistic Entry Path

In organized Illinois territory the standard route is the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship rather than a direct utility hire. Groundman work with a contractor is how most people build the hours and the reference that get them onto the list. Use the IBEW local finder to identify which local holds the outside book for Chicago versus downstate, because they are not the same book.

What Gets You Called Back

  • Class A CDL, or a start date you can hit with one in hand
  • Documented climbing hours and bucket time, not just a certificate
  • Current OSHA 10 or 30 and clean energized-work discipline
  • Availability for winter ice callouts and multi-day storm restoration
FAQ

Illinois Lineman Questions

Do I need to join a union to work line in Illinois?

Illinois has no right-to-work law, and outside line work at ComEd, Ameren Illinois and most signatory contractors is covered. Practically, if you want a career here you will end up in a local.

Where does the storm overtime come from without hurricanes?

Ice storms and heavy wet snow from December through March, plus derechos and straight-line wind in late spring and summer. Illinois also sends mutual aid crews south during hurricane season, which is where a lot of downstate linemen bank their year.

Is Chicago or downstate the better market to start in?

Chicago and the ComEd territory carry the most volume and the highest scale, but the competition for apprentice slots is heavier. Downstate co-ops and Ameren territory post less often but a groundman there gets more hands-on time faster.
