Missouri
Lineman Jobs in Missouri

Missouri is not right-to-work, so union outside line work carries more weight here than in Kansas or Iowa on either side, and pay sits mid-pack nationally. The state divides between two investor-owned utilities: Ameren Missouri holds the St. Louis side, Evergy holds Kansas City, with a dense rural co-op network in between. Missouri sits in the middle of the country's severe-weather corridor, so ice storms, spring tornado outbreaks, and derechos all put crews on callout.

Who hires

Missouri Employers and What They Run

Where you apply depends on which half of the state you want to live in, and whether you want IOU structure or co-op range. Read how IOUs, co-ops, and munis hire differently first.

Getting in

Most people start as a groundman with a co-op or contractor and work up, or apply straight into a registered outside lineman apprenticeship. Because Missouri is a union state, the IBEW route is a live option rather than an afterthought; use the IBEW local finder to see which book covers your county. Co-ops and munis run their own non-union apprenticeships. A Class A CDL is expected either way.

Questions

Missouri Lineman FAQ

Is Missouri a union state for linemen?

Yes. Missouri is not right-to-work, which puts IBEW outside construction work in a stronger position here than in neighboring Kansas, Iowa, or Arkansas. Co-op and municipal linework is still largely non-union.

When is storm season in Missouri?

Ice storms run December through February, tornado and severe thunderstorm outbreaks peak March through June, and derechos can hit through midsummer. Missouri crews get called out more months of the year than most states, and storm pay reflects it.

Should I go Ameren, Evergy, or co-op?

Ameren and Evergy split the state east and west, so geography usually decides it before anything else. Co-ops pay less on base in most cases but give you a wider job and more overtime exposure on rural feeders.
