Kentucky Lineman Jobs

Kentucky is not a traditional single-utility state: LG&E and KU cover the central corridor, Duke serves the Cincinnati suburbs across the river, and two G&T cooperatives plus TVA-connected systems own most of the rest. Pay sits below the national median, though Louisville and the Cincinnati-adjacent counties pull up against the rural east. The storm season here is ice, not hurricanes: December through February, on long rural spans through hardwood, which is why crews chase the state's own outages instead of traveling south for them.

Who Hires Here

LG&E and KUIOU

Sister utilities covering Louisville, Lexington and much of central Kentucky.

Duke Energy KentuckyIOU

Small northern territory around Covington, run out of the Cincinnati operation.

East Kentucky PowerG&T Co-op

Generation and transmission behind the member co-ops in the eastern coalfields.

Big Rivers ElectricG&T Co-op

Western Kentucky G&T, headquartered near Owensboro and Henderson.

TVA-Connected SystemsMuni / Co-op

Far western counties around Paducah buy power from TVA and hire locally.

Line ContractorsContractor

Where most volume sits, on utility maintenance and ice-storm restoration.

Which door you knock on changes the process: read how IOU, co-op and municipal hiring differ before you apply to all three the same way.

Getting In

Kentucky is right-to-work, so union membership is never a condition of employment, but LG&E and KU line crews are IBEW-represented and the co-ops largely are not. Most people start as a groundman with a contractor or a member co-op, then apply into an apprenticeship once they have a year in.

What Actually Gets You Hired

Class A CDL before you apply, not after the offer.
Distribution troubleshooting experience, since rural feeders here run long and fault-finding is the job.
Winter availability. Ice storms are what fund the overtime, so read the storm restoration field guide before your first callout.

For the union track, find and sign the right book through the IBEW local finder. For the co-op track, check the apprenticeship programs by state.

Common Questions

How does Kentucky lineman pay compare?

Below the national median statewide, with Louisville and the northern Kentucky counties near Cincinnati paying meaningfully better than the eastern coalfields. See where it lands in the salary by state guide.

Is Kentucky a union state for line work?

Kentucky is right-to-work. The investor-owned utilities run IBEW-represented crews; most co-op distribution work is non-union, which is a large share of the state's line miles.

What kind of storm work is there in Kentucky?

Ice storms from December through February are the driver, plus severe spring thunderstorm and tornado damage. Crews here restore their own long rural spans more often than they travel out for hurricanes.
