Lineman Jobs in Tennessee

Tennessee is a right-to-work state, and the grid here is unusual: TVA owns the transmission backbone, but it sells power to local municipal utilities and co-ops that do the distribution hiring. That means your journeyman book matters less than which city system or co-op is posting, and pay sits mid-pack nationally with a cost of living that stretches it further than it would in California or the Northeast. Work clusters around Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, with manufacturing corridor buildout feeding contractor crews.

Who's hiring

Tennessee Employer Types

Tennessee Valley AuthorityFederal / Transmission

Federal power agency running the transmission system; hiring is transmission-side and process-heavy.

Nashville Electric ServiceMunicipal

City-owned distribution utility, one of the largest public power systems in the country.

Memphis Light, Gas & WaterMunicipal

Combined municipal utility covering West Tennessee distribution work.

Electric Co-opsRural

Rural systems across the state; smaller crews and looser hiring than the munis, and often the fastest way in.

What Gets You Hired

Nearly every journeyman posting wants a Class A CDL and documented climbing and energized work time. If you don't have line time, groundman and apprentice roles at co-ops are the realistic entry path, since the municipal systems run structured programs with long waitlists.

Tennessee Lineman FAQ

Is Tennessee a union state for line work?

Tennessee is right-to-work, so union membership is never a condition of employment, and a large share of co-op and contractor work here is non-union. Use the IBEW local finder to check which local covers outside line work in the city you're targeting.

What kind of storm work is there in Tennessee?

Winter ice storms and spring severe weather and tornado outbreaks drive most callouts, not hurricanes. Crews here also travel to the Gulf and Southeast for hurricane restoration, which is where the real storm pay shows up.

Who actually hires linemen in Tennessee, TVA or the local utility?

Both, but they hire for different work. TVA runs transmission; the distribution jobs, meaning the majority of line openings, come from municipal systems like NES and MLGW and from the co-ops they serve.
