Lineman Jobs in Georgia

Georgia is a right-to-work state, so the union book is not the default path here the way it is in the Midwest and Northeast; most line work runs through Georgia Power, a dense co-op network, and the contractors that serve both. Pay sits mid-pack against the national range, with Atlanta growth and utility expansion driving steady distribution and transmission hiring. Hurricane season runs June through November, and inland Georgia catches the remnants after landfall, which means storm restoration is a real part of the calendar, not an occasional bonus.

Who Hires Here

Georgia Linework Employers

Georgia PowerUtility

The state's investor-owned utility and the largest single employer of linemen in Georgia.

MEAG PowerMunicipal

Wholesale power for Georgia's municipal systems; feeds transmission and city-utility line work.

Georgia EMCsCo-op

Electric membership co-ops cover most rural territory and hire apprentices directly.

Pike ElectricContractor

Line construction and restoration contractor that staffs up hard during storm season.

Where the Work Is

Atlanta carries the volume, with Savannah, Augusta, Macon, and Columbus behind it. Savannah and the coastal counties see the worst of the hurricane exposure; the metro and the co-op territory in between run on distribution and transmission buildout. The split between how a co-op, a muni, and Georgia Power hire is not cosmetic, see the IOU vs co-op vs municipal guide before you decide where to apply.

Questions

Georgia Lineman FAQ

Is Georgia a union state for line work?

Georgia is right-to-work, so union membership is not a condition of employment and most Georgia Power and co-op crews are not organized. If you want to work the book anyway, run your ZIP through the IBEW local finder rather than assuming a local covers outside line work in your area.

How do I get into the trade in Georgia with no experience?

The realistic path is groundman with a contractor like Pike, or a direct apprenticeship with Georgia Power or one of the EMCs, which hire and train their own. Georgia's co-ops are worth applying to early because they take apprentices without requiring you to go through a hall first; the apprenticeship programs by state guide covers the applications.

When is storm work available in Georgia?

Hurricane season runs June through November, hitting the coast hardest around Savannah and pushing inland damage into the metro and south Georgia. Contractors staff restoration crews on short notice, and storm pay is where a lot of Georgia linemen make their year.
