Florida
Lineman Jobs in Florida

Florida is a right-to-work state, and its two biggest utilities run largely non-union, so your pay depends more on which employer you land than on which book you signed. Base pay lands mid-pack against the national median, but hurricane season from June through November turns storm pay into the real earnings lever. Undergrounding and hardening work runs year-round, which means splicing and trenching hours, not just overhead.

Who Hires

Where the Work Is

Florida Power & LightIOU

The dominant employer, covering the east coast and most of South Florida.

Duke Energy FloridaIOU

Holds the central and Gulf Coast territory around Orlando and St. Petersburg.

Tampa ElectricIOU

Smaller footprint, concentrated in the Tampa Bay metro.

Line ContractorsContractor

Where most apprentices start, and where the storm surge crews get staffed.

Florida also runs a real municipal and co-op layer, JEA in Jacksonville and OUC in Orlando among them, which hire less often but hold crews longer. That mix changes how you apply; see IOU vs co-op vs municipal hiring differences.

Getting In

Your Realistic Entry Path

Most Florida linemen start as a groundman with a contractor and climb from there. Utility apprentice slots at FPL and Duke are direct-hire and competitive, so a contractor season plus a lineman school certificate beats waiting for a posting. Union outside apprenticeships exist but cover a thinner slice of this market than in the Northeast; check the IBEW local finder before assuming a book is worth signing.

What Gets You Called Back

  • Class A CDL, or a start date you can hit with one in hand
  • Documented climbing hours and bucket time, not just a certificate
  • Underground and splicing exposure, given how much hardening work is trenched
  • Verified availability for 16-hour storm rotations from June through November
FAQ

Florida Lineman Questions

Is Florida union or non-union for line work?

Florida is right-to-work, and FPL, Duke Florida and most contractors run non-union, so union coverage is thinner here than in the Northeast or Midwest. You can build a full career in this state without ever signing a book.

When is storm season, and how much does it change my check?

June through November, with the heaviest landfall risk in August and September. A single major hurricane restoration can add more to your year than several months of base work, which is why storm availability is the first thing Florida employers screen for.

Do I need underground experience to work in Florida?

Not to get hired, but the state's undergrounding and hardening programs mean trenching and splicing work runs steady between storms. Crews that can do both overhead and underground stay busy in the off-season.
