South Carolina Lineman Jobs

South Carolina is a right-to-work state where most outside line work runs through non-union utilities and contractors, so pay sits mid-pack nationally and your overtime, not your base rate, is what moves the number. Hurricane season runs June through November, and the coastal counties from Charleston to Myrtle Beach drive the callouts that fill out a paycheck. Expect to climb, expect a Class A CDL requirement, and expect to work in Lowcountry heat and humidity most of the year.

Duke EnergyIOU

Santee CooperState Utility

State-owned generation and transmission, unusual among the states and worth applying to directly.

Palmetto ElectricCo-op

Lowcountry cooperative serving Beaufort, Jasper, and Hampton counties.

Blue Ridge ElectricCo-op

Upstate cooperative territory with rural distribution and right-of-way work.

Pike Electric & MasTecContractor

The two contractors most likely to hire you first, especially during storm season.

Where to Look

Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Spartanburg, Myrtle Beach, Rock Hill, Florence, and Anderson carry the bulk of postings.
Co-ops cover most of the rural mileage between those metros; how they hire is different from how the IOUs do it, and the difference matters when you're deciding where to apply.
A Class A CDL clears the first filter at nearly every employer on this list. Get it before you apply, not after.

Common Questions

South Carolina Lineman FAQ

How much do linemen make in South Carolina?

Base pay lands mid-pack against the national median, held down by right-to-work and a mostly non-union employer set. What closes the gap is hurricane season: from June through November, storm pay and doubled-up hours can add serious money to a coastal lineman's year.

Is there union line work in South Carolina?

Very little compared to the Northeast or the West. South Carolina is right-to-work, and most utilities and contractors here hire non-union, so check the IBEW local finder before assuming there's a book to sign in your area.

How do I get started with no experience?

Groundman first, almost always. Contractors like Pike and MasTec hire green hands ahead of storm season and move you up, while the co-ops and Santee Cooper run more formal apprenticeship applications that take longer but pay off with a real progression.
