Lineman Jobs in Charlotte

Duke Energy's Carolinas system anchors this market, and the work across Mecklenburg County splits between distribution, underground, and substation. Average Charlotte pay sits around $64,962 a year, well under Mid-Atlantic and West Coast metros, so run the numbers against the salary-by-state guide before you move here for the job. North Carolina is right-to-work, but IBEW Local 379 still books outside line calls in the area across A, B, and C Class, Operator, Groundman, URD, and CDL permit classifications, which means there is a graded ladder here rather than a journeyman-or-nothing door.

Common Questions

Charlotte Lineman FAQ

Can I get on with no journeyman ticket?

Yes. Local 379 books C Class, Groundman, and CDL permit classifications, so Charlotte has a graded entry ladder rather than a hard journeyman gate. Contractors like MasTec and United Utility also hire green on the ground.

Why is Charlotte pay lower than other metros this size?

North Carolina is right-to-work with a large non-union contractor base, which holds the local average near $64,962 even in Duke's headquarters city. Traveling or chasing storm work is how most Charlotte hands close the gap.

Is the work overhead or underground?

Both. Mecklenburg County's subdivision growth keeps URD work steady, and Local 379 lists URD as its own classification, so it is worth building that experience deliberately.
