North Carolina
North Carolina Lineman Jobs

North Carolina is a right-to-work state with one of the lowest union densities in the country, so most line work here is non-union utility or contractor work rather than book work. Pay sits near the national median for journeymen, with the real upside coming from hurricane season, which runs June through November and hits the coastal plain hardest. Duke Energy's territory covers most of the state, which makes the co-ops and contractors your other two realistic doors.

Who Hires

Employers Worth Your Application

One IOU dominates, a large co-op network fills the rural gaps, and contractors carry the storm and build work. The hiring differences between IOUs, co-ops, and munis decide how fast you move up here.

Duke EnergyIOU

The state's largest employer of linemen, covering Charlotte, the Triad, and most of the Piedmont.

Dominion Energy NCIOU

Northeastern counties near the Virginia line, a smaller footprint but steady crews.

Pike ElectricContractor

Headquartered in Mount Airy, and a common first contractor job for NC groundmen.

Electric Co-opsCo-op

Rural systems statewide; smaller crews, wider job scope, and heavy storm exposure on the coast.

Municipal SystemsMuni

Town-owned utilities across the Piedmont hire directly and post publicly.

Line Construction FirmsContractor

Distribution and transmission build tied to Raleigh and Charlotte metro growth.

Getting In

Your Entry Path

With low union density, the common route is groundman with a contractor, then into a utility or co-op apprenticeship rather than signing a book. If you want the union path, check the IBEW local finder before assuming a local covers your county. Statewide, the apprenticeship programs by state guide shows how utility-run programs differ from union ones.

What Actually Gets You Hired Here

  • Storm availability. Hurricane season is the single biggest variable in NC line work and the fastest way to earn storm pay. Employers ask whether you can roll out on short notice.
  • CDL Class A. A Class A with a current DOT card moves you past most contractor screens before the interview.
  • Climbing, not just bucket time. Coastal and rural co-op territory has poles a bucket cannot reach after a storm.
  • Willingness to work outside the metros. Charlotte and Raleigh are crowded applicant pools. Eastern NC and the co-ops are not.
Questions

North Carolina FAQ

Do I need to be in the IBEW to work as a lineman in North Carolina?

No. North Carolina is right-to-work and has among the lowest union membership rates in the country, so most line jobs here are non-union utility, co-op, or contractor positions.

How much storm work is there?

A lot, and it is seasonal. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, and the coastal plain and Outer Banks take the worst of it. NC crews also travel out of state for restoration in neighboring markets.

Where are the jobs concentrated?

Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro carry the growth-driven distribution and transmission build. Wilmington and the eastern counties run on co-op and storm restoration work, and the applicant pool there is thinner.
