Chicago Lineman Jobs

Chicago sits in ComEd's northern Illinois territory, where dense Loop load pushes a large share of the work underground while the suburbs and lakefront stay overhead. The average Chicago lineman salary runs about $90,951 a year, near the top of the Midwest; check the power lineman salary by state guide for how that compares. Illinois is not right-to-work, and IBEW Local 9 covers outside electrical and line-clearance work in the metro.

Getting In

What Gets You Hired Here

ComEd runs its own apprenticeship, more than two years of classroom and on-the-job training, and it is the most direct path into the metro. If you would rather come in through the union, sign the book at Local 9 and read the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship guide first so you know what indenturing costs you in time.

Class A CDL before you apply. Union and utility stacks in this metro are deep enough that missing one drops you.
Underground and splicing exposure, because downtown Chicago load lives in vault and duct work more than on poles.
A resume that leads with hours and system voltage, not job titles; the lineman resume template shows the layout.
