New Hampshire Lineman Jobs

New Hampshire is not a right-to-work state, and outside line work here runs through a small utility set across a heavily wooded, low-population grid. Pay sits above the national median, in line with the rest of New England, though the state has fewer openings than Massachusetts or Connecticut. Winter is the season that drives overtime: December through March nor'easters and ice loading on tree-lined distribution bring the callouts.

Who Hires Here

EversourceIOU

Largest footprint in the state, covering Manchester, Nashua, Concord and Portsmouth.

UnitilIOU

Smaller service territory around Concord and the Seacoast, so crews are lean.

NH Electric Co-opCo-op

Rural and mountain territory where tree-clearing and long spans define the day.

Liberty UtilitiesIOU

Electric territory in the Salem and Lakes Region areas.

Line ContractorsContractor

Where most of the volume is, on utility maintenance contracts and storm callouts.

Municipal SystemsMuni

A handful of town-owned systems that post rarely and hire locally.

The IOU, co-op and municipal split matters more here than in bigger states, because the co-op and munis together hire only a few linemen a year.

Getting In

With this few utility openings, most people start as a groundman with a contractor and climb from there. Bring a Class A CDL, demonstrated climbing ability, bucket truck time and a phone you answer at 2 a.m. in February.

What Moves You Up the List

Class A CDL before you apply, not after the offer.
Pole climbing experience you can show, not describe.
Availability for winter storm restoration, including travel out of state.

If you want the union route, sign the book through the IBEW local finder, or read the IBEW outside lineman apprenticeship guide before you commit to a contractor track.

Common Questions

Do New Hampshire linemen make good money?

Pay runs above the national median, consistent with New England utility scales, and winter storm overtime adds meaningfully on top. Compare against neighboring states in the salary by state guide.

Is storm work steady in New Hampshire?

Winter is the driver: nor'easters and ice storms from December through March, made worse by heavy tree cover over distribution lines. Crews here also travel south and west on mutual aid, so storm pay is a real part of the annual number.

Is New Hampshire a union state for line work?

New Hampshire is not right-to-work, and the major investor-owned utilities operate under IBEW agreements. Contractor crews vary, so confirm the agreement before you sign on.
