Your Entry Path
Most people break in as a groundman with a contractor or by testing into an apprenticeship through the IBEW local finder. Nevada's position on the salary-by-state map means the apprenticeship is worth waiting for rather than settling into permanent groundman work.
What Actually Gets You Hired Here
- CDL Class A. Nevada's long hauls between Elko, Reno, and the Las Vegas valley make a Class A and current DOT card a screening filter, not a bonus.
- Heat tolerance you can document. Summer work in the valley runs past 110°F; contractors ask about it in the interview.
- Transmission and substation experience. Solar interconnections and desert transmission drive most of the new-build work.
- Willingness to travel. Mining-region and transmission jobs sit far from any metro. Per diem is normal.
Nevada FAQ
No. Nevada is right-to-work, so union membership cannot be a condition of employment. But NV Energy and most outside line construction run union crews, so signing a book is still the fastest route to journeyman scale.
Not the way there is on the Gulf Coast. Nevada has no hurricane season and little ice; wildfire response in the Sierra foothills is the main emergency driver. If you want storm pay, expect to travel out of state for it.
Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas carry the growth-driven distribution work. Reno, Sparks, and Carson City hold the northern utility crews, and Elko is where mining-region and rural co-op work sits.
