Lineman Jobs in California

Three investor-owned utilities carry almost the whole state, and all three are spending heavily on wildfire hardening and undergrounding. That work is why California pay sits near the top of the national range. California is not a right-to-work state; PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E crews and their signatory contractors are organized, so expect to work through a hall.

Who's Hiring

California Utilities and Contractors

PG&ENorth / Central

Bay Area through the Central Valley, with the largest undergrounding program in the state.

SoCal EdisonSouth

Los Angeles and inland Southern California distribution and transmission.

SDG&ESan Diego

Smaller territory, backcountry circuits, and steady hardening work.

Munis & ContractorsEverywhere

LADWP and SMUD hire direct; the hiring process differs from an IOU.

Where the Work Concentrates

Los Angeles, the Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego, and Fresno hold the bulk of the postings. Solar interconnection and grid rebuilds keep transmission crews busy inland, while the coastal and foothill circuits drive most of the undergrounding calls.

Getting Hired

What California Employers Want

Class A CDLCalifornia requires it for lineworkers. A permit gets you an application; the license keeps the job.

Union BookMost line work here is signatory. Sign the right IBEW book for the territory you want.

Climbing TimeHooks and belt work still gates apprentice and journeyman hiring, even on undergrounding-heavy systems.

Fire Season AvailabilityLate summer through fall means shutoffs, patrols, and restoration. Say yes to it or expect fewer callbacks.

Questions

California FAQ

Do linemen make more in California?

Yes, California sits above the national median, driven by union scale at the three IOUs and heavy hardening budgets. Cost of living eats a real share of the difference, especially in the Bay Area and San Diego.

Is storm work a thing in California?

Not hurricanes. Your overtime money comes from wildfire season, public safety power shutoffs, and winter atmospheric river damage in the north.

How do I get in with no experience?

Groundman first, then a union apprenticeship at PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E, most of which gate on the CAST test. Munis like LADWP and SMUD run their own hiring outside the hall.
