Lineman Jobs in Mississippi

Mississippi is a right-to-work state and one of the most co-op-heavy grids in the country, so most of the work sits with member-owned distribution systems rather than a single big utility. Base pay runs below the national median, and hurricane season from June through November is where the money gets made. If you won't take storm callouts, this is the wrong state.

Who Hires Here

Mississippi Employers

Entergy Mississippi

IOU

Serves Jackson and much of the western half of the state, including the Delta.

Mississippi Power

IOU

Southeast Mississippi, including Gulfport and Meridian, and the crew that catches the coast first.

Electric Cooperatives

Member-owned

Roughly two dozen distribution co-ops cover the majority of the state's land area.

TVA Service Area

Federal power

Northeast Mississippi around Tupelo buys from TVA; local power companies do the hiring.

Co-ops post on their own sites and hire slowly on local ties; the IOUs run structured apprentice cycles. That difference is worth understanding before you apply, and the IOU vs co-op hiring guide lays it out. Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Tupelo, and Meridian anchor the state's crews.

Getting Hired

What Mississippi Wants

Groundman first is the honest answer here. Co-ops rarely run open apprenticeships and often promote from the yard, so get on a line contractor's crew, log climbing hours, and put your storm restoration experience at the top of the resume. Outside line work in the state does run IBEW books; check the IBEW local finder rather than guessing at local numbers.

Before You Apply

Class A CDL, or a documented plan to get one
Pole climbing hours and bucket truck time, both named explicitly on the resume
Written hurricane-season availability; this is a screening question, not a preference
Willingness to live rural, since co-op territory is where most of the openings are

Questions

Mississippi FAQ

Do linemen make good money in Mississippi?

Base pay runs below the national median, but hurricane restoration overtime closes a lot of that gap for anyone who takes callouts. The storm pay guide covers what a season actually adds up to.

When is storm season in Mississippi?

Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the Gulf Coast around Gulfport and Biloxi taking the direct hits and inland co-op territory getting the long restoration tail.

Do I need to join a union to work in Mississippi?

No. Mississippi is a right-to-work state, so membership is never a condition of employment, and much of the co-op and contractor work here is non-union.
