Lineman Jobs in Colorado

Colorado runs on a split market: Xcel Energy covers the Denver metro and the Front Range corridor, while co-ops like CORE Electric Cooperative and United Power own the territory that fills in around them. Colorado is not a right-to-work state, so outside line work here is heavily union, and if you don't know which book to sign, start with the IBEW local finder. Line pay sits above the national median, largely because Front Range cost of living and interconnection work on new wind and solar keep crews busy year-round; the salary-by-state guide shows where that lands against other markets.

Who's hiring

Colorado Employers and What Each One Means for You

Xcel EnergyIOU

The largest IOU footprint in the state, covering Denver, Boulder, Pueblo and the Front Range corridor.

CORE Electric CooperativeCo-op

Serves the foothills and territory south of Denver, where mountain terrain drives the work.

United PowerCo-op

North of Denver through Brighton and the growth corridor toward Fort Collins.

Line contractorsContractor

Interconnection and rebuild work on eastern-plains wind and solar; travel and per diem come with it.

What the seasons actually demand

Colorado's outage driver is not hurricanes; it is heavy wet spring snow on the Front Range and high-wind events that run down the foothills, with wildfire hardening work layered on top in the western half of the state. Storm call here is short-burst and local rather than a two-week deployment, so it pays differently than Gulf Coast work; the storm pay guide explains how those two models compare. Co-op and IOU territories also hire on different clocks, which the IOU vs co-op breakdown covers.

Common questions

Colorado Lineman FAQ

Do I need to be union to work line in Colorado?

Colorado is not a right-to-work state, and outside line construction and most IOU work runs union, so signing a book is the standard path. Some co-ops and smaller contractors hire non-union, but you narrow your options considerably by ruling out the hall.

How do I get in without experience?

Groundman first, then apprenticeship. Contractors working eastern-plains renewable interconnection and Front Range rebuilds hire groundmen regularly, and that year on the ground is what makes an outside lineman apprenticeship application competitive.

Does mountain territory change the job?

Yes. Foothills and western-slope circuits mean longer drives to a single trouble call, more off-road access, and wildfire mitigation work that flatland distribution crews rarely touch. Front Range utility work looks like standard urban distribution by comparison.
